LENTEN MEDITATIONS  2008  -
CHRIST:  OUR LIGHT AND LIFE

        Dear Friends in Christ,

Once again I’m pleased to present to you our Lenten Book of
Meditations. Through the years I have been impressed by the
many articles art work, reflections, and the striking pictures
that  have graced the cover of this work.

This year we have a beautiful picture that initially took my breath away. I could scarcely believe my eyes, it looks like the Sea of Galilee. Exactly like the Sea, traveling by boat from Capernaum on down to the town of Tiberius. How appropriate for our Lenten Book, a wonderful visual reminder of a place where Jesus spent a great deal of his ministry.

But notice if you will, the hills that arise above the shoreline. That is a place of wilderness, as much in Jesus’ time as in ours. And it is in a place of wilderness where we begin our spiritual journey through these forty days.

Recall, when Jesus began his ministry, he was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Throughout Scripture, we find individuals and entire peoples being led to the wilderness after an experience with the divine. One needs only think of the Israelites having crossed the Red Sea, wandering in the wilderness, until the time came in which they were led home.

And so this year, I suggest our Lenten journey will be a path through the wilderness to Easter. And I’m grateful, because it is precisely in the wilderness that we encounter our Living God.

It is my hope that these offerings will be to you and to me signs and reminders of the many ways God comes to us in our own wilderness. In this upcoming journey we will all take, let those reflections be for us a guide, teacher, friend, companion along the way. For when we feel we are at most in the wilderness, God is very close indeed.

As always, I am deeply appreciative to all who helped in this work. To all who made contributions, and especially to Karyn, Bob and the Arnold family without whom this would not be possible, know of my thanks.

Faithfully,

Lance
